Bring the whole family for a late afternoon of food and fun! First, we’ll enjoy a casual BBQ dinner in the Underground Lounge and Café, then we’ll head up to the Westrock Community room for a relaxed community dance.
Circles, squares, whole set and contra dances – some call an evening of these kinds of dances a “barn dance.” Others use the terms “hoedown,” “family dance,” or even “barnless dance.” We have settled on the phrase “community dance.” Whatever you call it, it’s a great way to connect with friends and family through music, using dancing as the medium.
You have no dance experience? No problem! Woody and Marcia McKenzie make the evening easy. Marcia will teach you everything you need to know. She will walk you through each arrangement, giving you a preview of how it works, and show you how to do the simple figures that will allow you to meet and greet a number of other folks during the course of each dance. It’s fun, and it brings you closer together as a group. And, it’s appropriate for all ages and levels of experience. If you can walk, you can do these dances!
Woody and Marcia McKenzie have been playing together since they were married in 1983. They met in the White Mountains of Arizona, where they were introduced through their music. Long-time residents of the New River Valley (Virginia), they moved to Lynchburg in the fall of 1998 and have been running community dances ever since.
Space is limited for our first community dance, so register today.
