Going Fourth, an exhibit of charcoal drawing by Artist Charlie Brouwer of Willis VA, is his response to suddenly becoming blind in the fall of 2022. His condition meant he was unable to drive or read and could not use power tools to construct the wood sculptures he’d been creating for 40 years. As his wife drove him here and there, he looked out the window at the dark silhouettes of trees against the winter sky. The trees spoke to him in many ways, reminding him of strength, resilience, calmness, patience and quiet acceptance of the way things can be overcome by their beauty. He began drawing them with charcoal- charcoal that comes from trees. “The exhibit is about trees and going forth from where we are, with whatever we have to seek beauty, truth, and goodness wherever we can find them.” This exhibit is immersive and strong, full of quiet beauty and heart.
