On Friday, September 13, 2019, the What’s Your Story? project will host a potluck dinner and story sharing session in the Thomas P. Dean/Racey and Dean Underground at the Historic Masonic Theatre. Dinner will begin at 6 pm, with storytelling getting underway at 6:45 and lasting until 8 pm. “Stories shared build connection and community,” says WYS? project director Joan Vannorsdall. “What’s Your Story? events and books connect Alleghany Highlands residents through story, building relationship. Everybody loves a good story—and sharing it over good food makes it even better.” The committee hopes to make the storytelling dinners quarterly events at the Theatre, with a suggested theme for each gathering. The September topic is “Back to School.” “We’re hoping to enjoy stories from all ages, all walks of life. Who doesn’t remember feeling of walking into your classroom on the first day of school? Or the joy of the final bell on the last day? We hope teachers and students and administrators and parents—everyone—will come share a story,” Vannorsdall says. “If you’d rather tell a story from another part of your life, tell it. We’ll listen.” The WYS? project has completed four books to date, focusing on the Historic Masonic Theatre, The C&O Railroad and Hospital, Green Pastures, and Dabney S. Lancaster Community College. The books are available at the Historic Masonic Theatre, the Clifton Forge Antique Mall, Livy’s Closet, and the Chamber of Commerce. The books will be sold at each storytelling event. The event is free of charge; participants are asked to bring a covered dish and a good story. • historicmasonictheatre.com/historic-masonic-theatre/events/
